Frequently Asked Questions

Updated: Nov 12, 2024

Why make an appointment?

Everyone eats. However, there is so much confusing information out there. Sitting down with an expert will help you sort out a plan that is best for YOU.  Food provides the foundation of health and wellness, and yet each individual is unique and therefore requires a unique blend of foods for their needs.

Our practitioners use traditional wisdom and current scientific knowledge to identify the best foods, herbs, and supplements for your needs. Herbs and supplements are not for everyone, but when appropriately taken, people often see great effects on their emotional and physical well-being.

We incorporate health coaching into all of our sessions, to not only make recommendations but to help you incorporate your recommendations into your lifestyle so you can make long-term, positive changes to your health.

Where should I go for my appointment?

As of August 2023, our practice is fully virtual and does not have in-person appointments. We offer virtual consultations via Zoom and phone.

Where can I find the Zoom link for my virtual appointment?

Your confirmation message will have a zoom link for you.  You can also login to Healthie at the time of your appointment to access the Zoom link for your virtual appointment with your provider.

Are you licensed?

Rebecca Snow, Kate Costello, and Lori Fish Bard are Certified Nutrition Specialists and are licensed as nutritionists in the State of Maryland. Kate costello is also licensed in North Carolina and Washington DC.  Rebecca Snow is also licensed in Florida.

Currently herbal practice is not licensed in the United States. Herbal consulting services do not include diagnosing or treating disease, are not intended to prescribe any intervention for a particular symptom, illness or disease and are not a substitute for licensed nutritional or medical care. Clinical herbalists can apply to become registered with the American Herbalist Guild as a professional herbalist, indicated by the letters RH (AHG).  Rebecca Snow is a registered herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild.  Andrea Inscoe is working towards this.

Do you do offer functional lab testing?

Yes, our nutritionists offer functional lab testing through specialty lab companies such as Vibrant America, Diagnostic Solutions Lab, Genova Diagnostics, MosaicDX, Dutch, Cell Science Systems and more.

We can also glean helpful information from general laboratory tests that you run at your yearly or twice yearly physical exam.  Please share lab tests you have had in the last year with your practitioner. We love looking at CBC, blood chemistries, lipid panel, thyroid panel and more.

Lab testing is ordered on a case-by-case basis, and your nutritionist will discuss with you if ordering a lab would be beneficial to your work together.

Ordering for lab tests varies by company, and not all lab tests can be submitted for insurance reimbursement. For specifics, please discuss with your nutritionist.  You can learn more about our lab testing here.

Can I work with a nutritionist and herbalist at the same time?

Yes we encourage this! Our practitioners work closely and collaboratively together.

If you are a nutrition client and would like to add custom herbal formulations to your care plan, talk with your nutritionist about scheduling a follow-up appointment with one of our herbalists.

If you are an herbal client and would like to add nutrition therapy to your care plan, talk with your herbalist about scheduling a follow-up appointment with one of our nutritionists.

If I want to work with one of your other practitioners, do I have to pay the initial consult fee again?

No! Once you are established as a client in our practice, you can schedule a follow-up appointment with one of our other providers.   However, if you have not been seen in the practice in several years we may charge you a new patient fee again.

Will “this herb” or “this supplement” help with “this condition”?

Herbs & supplements are often advertised as specific for specific conditions,” i.e. Feverfew for migraine headaches.  But, herbs work differently than conventional medicines.

Herbs enhance the body’s physiology and work with the body.   By supporting the body’s health, herbs help the body find its natural rhythm and balance. As qualified herbalists, we do more than give an herbal “fix-it.” We help you look at the body as a whole to custom formulate herbs that address underlying root causes by strengthening areas of potential weakness.

How do herbs work?

Herbs improve health by enhancing tissue and organ function and supporting the body’s natural processes. Herbs also work through our senses of taste, sight, and smell, and create routines to enhance our emotional health and well-being.

Tonics are herbs that help the body to be more adaptive to physical, biochemical, immunological, and psychological stressors when used over a period of time.  For instance, nerve tonics help the nervous system become more adaptable to life’s stressors.

Herbs work because the body does!

Are herbs and supplements safe?

Although dietary supplements are relatively safer than drugs, every active substance has the potential to interact with the individual or other herbs, drugs, or supplements.  Our practitioners are qualified to research potential interactions to recommend the safest herbs and supplements possible.

Just because herbs and medical foods are natural does not mean they are safe.  Even water at high enough doses can be harmful to the body.  The theory “more is better” does not apply to dietary supplements.

If you are unsure about the safety or appropriate dose of an herb or supplement, contact a qualified practitioner.  Choosing good quality supplements is key to safety.  To learn more about herb quality and safety check out Council for Responsible Nutrition and American Herbal Products Association

Where can I find the recommendations from my last visit?

Your provider will send your written recommendations through our patient portal Healthie. You will receive a notification via email when they are ready.

You can view all past recommendations in the “Documents” section of your Healthie account in the “Session Notes” folder.

How will I get my custom herbal formulations?

We partner with a third-party herb dispensary called Herban Pharm. When your herbalist sends you your written recommendations after your appointment, they will submit any custom formulas to Herban Pharm.

To order your custom formulas from Herban Pharm, follow the emailed or texted link to confirm your shipping information and pay for your order. Once payment is submitted, Herban Pharm will fill your custom tea, tincture, or powder formula and ship it to you.

Where will I order the supplements my practitioner recommends?

We use Fullscript for the majority of our supplement recommendations. When your provider sends you your written recommendations after your appointment, they will submit recommended supplements through Fullscript.

To order your recommended supplements through Fullscript, follow the emailed or texted link to select the supplements you would like to purchase and pay for your order. Once payment is submitted to Fullscript, they will ship your order to you.

Occasionally, we order supplements through individual supplement companies. Your provider will confirm the cost of the supplement prior to ordering. Once confirmed, we will order the supplement to be shipped to you and charge the card we have on file.
